Learning how to tell the difference between narrative and expository text formats helps students comprehend the texts more efficiently and understand how the author organized his/ her ideas. Recently, while working with a teacher I mentor, we created summary sheets for both expository and narrative texts. These sheets are a great way to aid in analyzing the format and content of a text. These summary sheets can be used to work with students in guided and eventually independent practice as they read narrative and expository texts. Please feel free to use and adapt these sheets with your learners!
